Apple eyes smart magnets to attach accessories to your iPad The iPad already houses magnets that can hold smart covers and cases. Now, a newly-published Apple patent filing envisions a greater attraction for the technology.

The iPad's magnetic personality could help users attach an array of accessories to their tablets.
Published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, a patent fittingly named "Magnetic Attachment Unit" describes how the iPad's current magnet system could be expanded to hook up with docks, stands, touchpads, joysticks, cameras, other iPads, and even a special magnetic ring. iPad owners would be able to couple the tablet with an accessory without having to rely on the dock connector.
Accessories would connect to any side of the iPad, including the bottom, letting the tablet attach to compatible docks and stands. Apple's iOS would support the technology, so iPad users could attach or detach an accessory by pressing the home button.

Two iPads might even hook up with each other to expand their capabilities. Content displayed on the screen would extend from one iPad to the other. You could also view the screen on one iPad and use the virtual keyboard on the other iPad. Finally, the patent filing describes a magnetic ring that would let you swipe your hand over the screen to activate certain features.
As always, a patent filing doesn't mean the technology will ever appear in the real world. However, since magnets are already built into the iPad to support smart covers, expanding that idea to other accessories seems a natural next step.
And whether or not Apple moves forward on this front, at least one other company wants to tap into the power of magnets. Unveiled by Nano Magnetics at CES in January, a patent-pending device called Nanoport would use magnets to connect mobile devices with each other and with separate accessories.

Adobe issues emergency patch -- again

By Unknown   Posted at  08:11   No comments
Adobe Systems and Microsoft on Thursday issued patches with emergency measures for critical vulnerabilities in Flash and Internet Explorer.
Microsoft, which usually fixes security problems once a month on Tuesdays, distributed the off-calendar repair for Internet Explorer 9 and 10 because of the severity of the exploit. The fix is highly recommended for people who use those versions of IE since Microsoft described the previously unknown vulnerability in its security bulletin as actively being used in "limited, targeted attacks".

However, people who use those browsers must apply the fix manually with the FixIt shim tool. A permanent fix for the exploit is expected in three weeks or so.
Adobe has patched two versions of Flash Player with an emergency fix, due to a zero-day exploit being used on one of three known security holes in the software, the company said on its blog today. This is the second emergency patch the company has issued in two weeks.
First discovered by security firm FireEye, CVE-2014-0502 targets the Web sites of three nonprofit organizations.
The security firm recommends that Windows and Mac users of Flash Player version 12.0.0.44 upgrade immediately to 12.0.0.70, and that Linux users with Flash Player 11.2.202.336 upgrade to 11.2.202.341. Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 10 and IE 11 will update their built-in versions of Flash automatically.
The company also recommends that people who use Adobe AIR on Android update to version 4.0.0.1628.

Nvidia delivers more KitKat and an LTE-equipped Tegra Note 7

If you liked the Evga Tegra Note 7 but wished it had faster data, then Nvidia has just the tablet for you. Released today, just as Mobile World Congress is beginning to convene in Barcelona, Spain, the Tegra Note 7 LTE has everything you liked from the existing Note 7 family, but adds an i500 LTE modem for a 4G cellular connection.
From the outside, the jet black Note 7 LTE doesn't stand apart from its siblings. Here again, you'll have a stylus and the speakers on either side of the display that (when in landscape mode) make for a slightly wider tablet than most 7-inchers. We assume that the Note 7 LTE also has the full-length groove along its right side, a feature Eric Franklin doesn't care for.
The ISP display has the same resolution (1280 x 800), but the addition of Android 4.4.2 KitKat is a welcome touch. The Note 7 LTE runs on a quad-core Tegra 4 CPU, the camera has a 5-megapixel resolution (the front shooter is VGA), promised video playback is 10 hours, and the internal storage is 16GB plus a microSD slot for cards up to 32GB.
The Note 7 LTE will go on sale in the second quarter of this year for $299. In North America and Western Europe, it will be distributed under the Evga name and it the UK under the Dixons brand. Look for it also in Ukraine, Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, and China.
Check CNET for hands-on analysis of the Tegra Note 7 LTE after Mobile Wold Congress kicks off this Sunday. And with this announcement, Nvidia also said that it has started delivering an OTA update with Android 4.4.2 KitKat to its entire Tegra Note 7 line.

Chinese PC and smartphone maker Lenovo has issued an advisory cautioning consumers when buying its products from e-commerce companies like Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon.in, as these are not its authorised resellers.
"What we have noticed in the past few months is that some of these sites, and largely due to a marketplace kind of a setup, there are a lot of resellers that have cropped up, which are selling at very low predatory prices. These we believe may or may not be an authorised or genuine products," said Sudhin Mathur, Director, Smartphones, Lenovo India.
He added that the company has issued an advisory with a list of all authorised stores and genuine partners.
"E-commerce websites like SnapdealFlipkart and Amazon India are not authorised Lenovo resellers. We encourage you to check your warranty entitlements when you buy from these websites," Lenovo said in the advisory on its website.
In a bid to woo customers, e-commerce companies may offer heavy discounts on products, which are sometimes below prices offered in the offline market.
When contacted, Snapdeal said it takes "utmost care" to list products only by those sellers who have the necessary authorisation to sell these products.
"Customers can rest assured that all the products including Lenovo and Toshiba products which are available on Snapdeal.com are genuine and eligible for warranty," a Snapdeal spokesperson said.
According to an Amazon India spokesperson, sellers are "contractually obligated to list genuine products" with manufacturer warranty. This applies to all brands, it added.
